VINICULTURE.

Numerous archaeological, historical and ethnographic studies acknowledge the fact that Georgia was the native land of the first known cultivated grape species.

Winemaking tradition was always associated with history, culture, and life style of Georgian people. For Georgians wine is a symbol of hospitality, friendship, and long life.

Historical researches prove that vine cultivation started in Georgia over 8 000 years ago. Modern scientists assume that vine spread to European countries from Georgia. Some also believe that the word "wine" itself is of Georgian origin (Georgian "gvino").

For many centuries no power could separate Georgian peasants from their vines though that was the purpose of all numerous enemies who invaded the country. The scientists have well-grounded evidence to the fact that in the 1st millennium BC the Assyrians invading Colchis and Iberia uprooted mercilessly grape vines. Every foreign invader had ever since attempted to destroy Georgian vines. However, Georgian people had managed to protect and preserve the vine and bequeath it to the descendants.

Fertile ground, favourable climate, efforts and devoted love of hard-working people preserved over 500 species and varieties of aboriginal Georgian vine. Among these species there are such world famous as Saperavi, Alexandrouli, Odjaleshi, Rkatsiteli, Usakhelouri, Mtsvane, Chkhaveri, Aladasturi, Tsolikauri, Krakhuna, Tsitska. Famous brands of Georgian wines are made of these grape varieties - Mukuzani, Khvanchkara, Tsinandali, Napareuli, Kindzmarauli, Barakoni, which favour success at many world exhibitions and are awarded with numerous gold and silver medals.
